I am a photographer, gardener, woodworker, and car enthusiast in Albion California.

My earliest memories of taking pictures were as a young child in the 1960s with a Kodak Instamatic, snapping happily at family vacations. I was probably around 10 and was most focused on catching things that I found interesting: cars, carnival rides, old ghost town buildings: stuff a 6-year-old would find cool. In High School I bought a secondhand Rolleiflex 3.5B Medium Format TLR Camera for $20, signed up for a class in photography, and started trying to capture things that were “artistic”. I got better at handling my camera and taking pictures that were less snaps and somewhat intentionally composed, and listened to the teacher’s descriptions of what makes a good photograph, failing mostly but having fun learning to develop film and make enlargements in the school darkroom

Years later I had joined a car club and became the club newsletter editor. In that role I spent time trying to capture photos of club members, their cars, and the places we visited to fill the pages of the newsletter.

I took several short classes on photography, wanting to see how other photographers caught interesting or significant pictures. I got better at automotive photography, but also learned I had way more to learn, and not enough interest in that facet to really become proficient. I still dabble but also recognize that it takes so much time and coordination to set things up to really capture good automotive photos.

I began reading and more recently, watching videos about wildlife photography. I’ve always enjoyed watching birds and other animals in my surroundings, and so spent time learning how to take better, more compelling and interesting photos of the animals around me. We had been living in Washington State’s San Juan Islands, surrounded by stunning nature and animals, and I filled terabytes of computer memory with captures of my surroundings.

Six years ago we moved to an idyllic coastal home in the small town of Albion. I found myself surrounded by birds of so many types and behaviors and started trying to learn more about how to best capture them. I also discovered that we were regularly visited by bobcats, foxes, coyotes, skunks, raccoons, and a few other wonderful critters who allowed us to share their world as long as we stayed calm and quiet while they visited.

Here I am sharing some of my favorite captures. Feel free to contact me for more information about any of the photos presented here.
